Denmark’s largest collection of living plants
The Botanical Garden is an outdoor museum featuring Denmark’s largest collection of living plants. At the same time, the garden is one of Copenhagen’s most beautiful green spots – and the perfect site for a break between your visits to the six museums in the Parkmuseerne district.
Originally established by Christian IV, the Botanical Garden has occupied four different locations through the years. In 1871–74, the garden was moved to its current address on Copenhagen’s former ramparts after the fortifications were rendered obsolete. The landscape gardener H.A. Flindt drew up the design.
As you stroll through the garden, you can make a stop at the small shop to browse its selection of organically farmed flower bulbs, garden tools, pots and of course exciting plants and flowers. On the day you use your Parkmuseerne ticket to visit the Natural History Museum of Denmark, you can enjoy a 10% discount in the shop.
The impressive Palm House was modelled on the famous Crystal Palace in London, with the master brewer J.C. Jacobsen (creator of Carlsberg) as one of main driving forces behind the initiative. Here you will find a spectacular collection of tropical plants. When visiting in summer, don’t miss the Butterfly House, where live butterflies flutter among orchids and vanilla plants.
The Botanical Garden is part of the Natural History Museum of Denmark, which in turn is part of the University of Copenhagen. The museum is beautifully located at the eastern end of the garden.
